YEAR2021

The Summer of Love Icon Series chronicles the events of the 1967 phenomenon that transpired within San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. Conceived as a unifying force for the propagation of peace and love, the Summer of Love aimed to bring people together. These icons serve as visual representations of various facets of the Summer of Love, employing imagery, color, and stylistic elements. While the event yielded significant positive outcomes, its reality was less idyllic than its initial perception. The visual elements encapsulate the notions of peace and benevolence championed during the event, but the use of color and psychedelic style stands in stark contrast, symbolizing the rampant drug use and tragic loss of life that also characterized that summer.

ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR

EYE ICON

This icon encapsulates the era's peace advocacy. The eye, with the incorporation of a peace sign signifies the extent to which attendees of this event were devoted to the notions of peace and liberty, even to the extent that it obscured their recognition of the detrimental consequences associated with drug and psychedelic use.

FLOWER ICON

Flowers played a prominent and symbolic role during the Summer of Love, representing ideals such as peace, love, unity, and a sense of belonging. They were frequently adorned in people's hair, incorporated into clothing, and featured in various forms of art. A central objective of the Summer of Love was to protest the ongoing war, and as a gesture of promoting peace and denouncing violence, individuals often distributed flowers to each other.

HAIGHT ASHBURY ICON

The Summer of Love unfolded within the renowned San Francisco enclave of Haight-Ashbury. Subsequently, the neighborhood has experienced a gradual deterioration. While it remains endowed with a plethora of vibrant businesses, cultural richness, and a diverse populace, it has also grappled with issues such as littered streets and a surge in criminal activities affecting several local shops. This symbolic locale serves as a stark illustration that, despite the neighborhood's historical significance to the success of the Summer of Love, it, along with its inhabitants from that era, has not been immune to the adverse consequences of drug consumption.
